Course Overview

This workshop is an introduction to Positive Behaviour Support with a strong focus on working with clients with a disability. Participants will gain a greater understanding of behaviours of concern and how they can be assessed. It will include a practical run through of assessment models and exploring interactive assessment scenarios.

Learning Outcomes

• Understand key concepts – trauma, developmental trauma, relational trauma.
• Elicit the relationship between a child’s experience of family violence and trauma, and the associated impacts.
• Feel more confident to engage with young people.
• Feel confident and competent to have conversations with young people about their ‘preferred identity’.
• Consider working with a young person and non-offending family member to address young people’s use of violence.

Trainer Bio

Emma McCarthy is a highly experienced social worker and teacher, awarded a Masters in Special Education and over twenty-five years’ experience in the sector. Most of her career has been at the forefront of working with students at risk and suffering complex trauma. Emma successfully established the Berry Street School in Noble Park as the Principal. Currently Emma develops and runs programs, coaches and supports school teams to work with complex challenging behaviours, helping teachers understand what escalates students and creating strategies to support greater self-regulation for students, linked to function.  She has a deep understanding of how to work with a range of special needs and practical leadership experience in the implementation of strategies as part of a community of practice.
