NEW CHILDREN, YOUNG PEOPLE COMMISSIONER PRESENTS NEW OPPORTUNITIES TO BETTER PROTECT VICTORIA’S MOST VULNERABLE

The Centre for Excellence in Child & Family Welfare congratulates Liana Buchanan on her appointment as Victoria’s new Principal Commissioner for Children and Young People.

Ms Buchanan comes with a strong legal and advocacy background and will be a powerful voice for children and young people across Victoria.

“The Betrayal of Trust inquiry and the current Royal Commission into institutional child abuse paves the way for new safeguards to better protect vulnerable children and young people.

“But there is much more we can and should be doing to protect children.  This isn’t just a matter for the police or for child welfare services – it’s something we all must take responsibility for as a community.

“The Centre looks forward to working closely with Ms Buchanan to advance the interests of all children and young people – particularly the most vulnerable in our community, including children and young people in out of home care.”

Ms Tsorbaris acknowledged the significant contribution of outgoing Commissioner Bernie Geary.

“Bernie was a fearless advocate on behalf of Victoria’s children and young people over many decades.

“We look forward to honouring his legacy and furthering his tireless work alongside Ms Buchanan.”
