Today’s media update focuses exclusively on the findings of the Coroner regarding the death of Hayley, a toddler known to child protection who died of injuries that were inflicted at her home in July 2009. The Coroner has made six recommendations for change to help prevent deaths in similar circumstances in the future.

Today’s media update leads with calls for an independent inquiry into child abuse by clergy in the Catholic church in Victoria. The calls follow the recent extension of the reporting deadline for the Protecting Victoria’s Vulnerable Children Inquiry (late Jan. 2012), and reports that the Inquiry may examine aspects of abuse within religious organisations.
