Child Safe Standard 1: Understanding cultural safety for Aboriginal children and young people

The Commission for Children and Young People has developed resources to help organisations better understand cultural safety and why it is important for the safety of Aboriginal children and young people.

The Child Safe Standards are mandatory requirements for organisations who provide services or facilities for children and young people in Victoria. This includes sporting clubs, recreation services, religious and faith services, youth organisations, schools, and many more.

There are 11 Child Safe Standards in Victoria, which work together to protect children from harm or abuse. Organisations covered by the Child Safe Standards need to meet all 11 Standards, including Child Safe Standard 1.

Child Safe Standard 1 requires you to establish a culturally safe environment for Aboriginal children and young people, which makes them feel welcome and supported.

New resources to help you implement Child Safe Standard 1

The Commission for Children and Young People has new resources to help you with Child Safe Standard 1, including:

  • Understanding cultural safety for Aboriginal children and young people: A guide for implementing Child Safe Standard 1
  • Tips for creating a culturally safe environment
  • Frequently asked questions with Meena Singh, Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People.
  • Days of importance for Aboriginal communities.

The guide includes practical tools, tips and templates to help you meet your obligations under Standard 1.

Find the resources on the Commission’s website.
